Silicone Oil
Silicone oil is a colorless (or pale yellow), odorless, non-toxic, and non-volatile liquid. It is insoluble in water, exhibits very low vapor pressure, and has a high flash point, ignition point, and low freezing point. Depending on the number of polymer segments (*n*), the molecular weight and viscosity vary, allowing silicone oils to be produced in a wide range of viscosities.
Silicone oil possesses excellent heat resistance, electrical insulation, weather resistance, hydrophobicity, physiological inertness, and low surface tension. Additionally, it features a low viscosity-temperature coefficient, high compressibility, and certain variants even offer radiation resistance.
Silicone oil is valued for its unique properties, including a low-temperature viscosity coefficient, stability across extreme temperatures, oxidation resistance, high flash point, minimal volatility, superior insulation, low surface tension, non-corrosiveness to metals, and non-toxicity. These characteristics make it highly versatile for numerous applications. Among silicone oils, methyl silicone oil is the most widely used and commercially significant, followed by methyl phenyl silicone oil. Specialty functional and modified silicone oils are primarily employed for specific purposes.
Properties: Colorless, odorless, non-toxic, and non-volatile liquid.
Applications: Available in various viscosities, silicone oil is prized for its heat resistance, water repellency, electrical insulation, and low surface tension. Common uses include:
High-performance lubricants
Anti-vibration oils
Insulating oils
Defoaming agents
Release agents (e.g., for molds)
Polishing agents
Vacuum diffusion pump oils
When emulsified, it can be applied in automotive tire gloss treatments and dashboard polishing. Methyl silicone oil is the most prevalent type; after emulsification or modification, it is used in textile finishing for a smooth, soft feel. Emulsified silicone oil is also added to shampoos and personal care products to enhance hair lubrication. Other variants include ethyl silicone oil, methyl phenyl silicone oil, nitrile silicone oil, and polyether-modified silicone oil (water-soluble silicone oil).
